Prompt 1 ‘Water’ – 1st Day of Spring

with No Comments

Today is the first day of Spring

It is the Festival of Imbolc, and is known as Lá Fhéile Bríde or St Brigit’s day

This festival marked the beginning of spring and has been celebrated since ancient times. Visiting water sources, such as holy wells was a long held tradition on this day, to pray for good health

How about a short verse, or image, or sound recording about ‘Water’ in honour of the first day of Spring?

Prompt 3 ‘Colour’ – One colour

with No Comments

Colour is evocative. It rouses emotions within us. It can elevate something familiar and tell a story.

Consider this image of Menlo Castle, taken from the NUI Galway sports fields at Dangan (credit: Mark Grealish).

Menlo Castle Infrared (Alternate)

Consider how this image would look in another hue. A warm yellow glow telling a more nostalgic story, or a red hue, signalling excitement or danger.

Your challenge: Experiment with one colour today, and think about how to feature it prominently – in a painting, a photograph, or even a short narrative.

Prompt 3 ‘Sound’ – Soundscape

with No Comments

Here is a mesmerising video of birds murmuring over Lackagh in Co. Galway, almost two years ago today. Close your eyes and listen to the sounds you hear  – the swish of the birds, the air, a passing tractor, a dog barking. These noises combine to make our soundscapes. What is your soundscape?

Your Challenge: Map the sounds you hear today

Resources to help

How to make a sound map:

a) Find a comfortable spot to sit.
b) Mark an “X ” in the centre of a piece of paper which contains a circle about the same size as a CD . This shows your relative location on the map.
c) Close your eyes and listen for at least one minute. Listen for sounds from animals, birds, people, machinery  and other human activities.
d) Keep listening, but now draw pictures or symbols on the map representing all the sounds you hear, and where they are coming from. It is also possible to reflect the relative distances of the sounds by using the periphery of the page as a scale. Sounds that seem close should be near the ‘X’, whereas distant sounds should be represented on the outside of the page.
